## The Role of Education in Social Mobility

Among the core elements, education is followed as the most effective means for social mobility when it comes to the enhancement of the socio-economic status of a person. Education helps in the acquisition of knowledge, mastery of skills and acquisition of relevant certificates hence assisting people to find better jobs and earn higher income and hence better status in society. It became an equalizer, education helps all individuals within society to get an equal chance of success to lift them out from the cords of poverty.

An important avenue through which education leads to social mobility is through enabling people to find employment. Where education standard is concerned, it is most commonly associated with higher levels of income. For example, college graduates start with better and better paying jobs and with more job security than high school graduates. In addition, education strengthens people’s rational and analytical thought processing as well as problem solvers, qualities which are highly sought after in today’s labor force.

Education is a critical antecedent in this process where a person should have a right to access quality education. Education during the initial childhood years serves as a major and precipitate of lifelong learning. Basic education should be quality and must be able to effectively cater for every child in need irrespective of the origin of the child. Scholarship, financial assistance, educational loans and barrier-free entry systems granted to students in need are the means by which HEI’s contribute to the provision of underprivileged students with advanced education.

In addition, education fosters social transformation through the expansion of vision horizons while enhancing people’s participation in the political processes. The literate population is more active within society as voters, campaigners for social causes and active participants in any democratic process that may exist within a certain society. It is not only advantageous to the individual but to society as a whole since people are well informed and actively participating in the process.

In conclusion, education is the key to changing one’s status in the society hence attaining the dream status. Thus, education equips persons with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities needed to enhance their socio-economic status and by so doing, strengthens its function in producing a progressive society.
